Fostering a Competitive Region.

The COG is tasked by the US Economic Development Administration (EDA) to facilitate, compile, and complete a 5-year economic development strategy plan for the region.  The COG has recently compiled a draft plan that is available for review and implementation.

Brownfields : NWNM Brownfields Assessment Coalition

Transforming Brown to Green.

In 2009, the COG received award notification from the EPA Brownfields program of a $1M grant for Phase I and Phase II environmental assessments for eligible projects in NWNM.  Funding was made available through the "American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (ARRA)".

Regional Planning Organization (RPO)

Planning for Sustainable and Efficient Transportation Systems

NWRPO.  The Northwest NM Regional Planning Organization (NWRPO) is an interactive planning forum that was established by the NM Department of Transportation (NMDOT) as a means to develop an ongoing and cooperative planning process to identify current and future transportation needs, plans, and projects, in the RPO region.  The NMDOT uses this forum to envoke informed recommendations for multimodal transportation and enhancement projects in order to promote and implement an efficient and sustainable transportation network withing the northwest region, consisting of San Juan, McKinley, Cibola, and portions Carton counties.  The Northwest NM Council of Governments provides one planner to staff this program.

State Planning and Development District I

NWNMCOG is the regional planning agency for northwestern New Mexico, also known as “State Planning & Development District 1" , established under State statute in 1968.

 NWNMCOG utilizes State-appropriated Grant-in-Aid funds in combination with other funds to support planning and technical assistance activities in the following areas:

Program management, Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), Infrastructure Capital Improvement Plan (ICIP), Legislative Relations, Capital Outlay, Rural Support, Water Planning, Technical Assistance, Regional Planning, ARRA Assistance.

Regional Water Planning:
Region 6 Water Plan

Water is Life.

When funding assistance is available from the New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission, the NWNMCOG coordinates inter-agency regional water planning efforts for New Mexico Water Planning Region 6, comprising Cibola County and the portion of McKinley County not in the San Juan Basin.  The COG has also completed many of the regions 40-year Water Plans for its member governments as required by the State.
